The Alpha Legal Foundation is a non-profit organization working to diversify Maine’s legal profession. Our work is built on three pillars.
- We reach out. We create community by convening current BIPOC lawyers and law school graduates and allies. Powered by community connection, we seek to establish paths forward for current and future professionals.
- We reach up. We intentionally and respectfully engage with current institutional leaders and gatekeepers to examine and challenge the culture of the legal profession. In so doing, we strive to maintain high standards of professionalism while removing cultural vestiges that present unnecessary barriers to access and success.
- We reach back. We inspire and engage with the future generation of lawyers and law school graduates through age-appropriate pipeline programs that start in 4th grade and continue through law school.
In 1844, Maine became the home of the U.S.’s first Black attorney, Macon Bolling Allen. The Alpha Legal Foundation honors his legacy and seeks to restore Maine as a state that leads the nation in legal diversity.
